TCW Sponsors New “Club Connect” Reading Room at Esperanza Elementary School

United Way’s Club Connect Adopt-a-School Program Delivers Books to Nation’s Most Disadvantaged Schools; TCW Among the First Los Angeles Companies to Sponsor a School

November 03, 2016

LOS ANGELES – November 3, 2016 – The TCW Group, a global asset management firm, announced today that the firm has sponsored a new “Club Connect” reading room at Esperanza Elementary School in Los Angeles’ Westlake neighborhood.  The room, which was officially opened on Friday, October 28th, is designed to give parents and students a place to read together – during the school week and on weekends – providing a tremendous educational resource for this low-income community.

“TCW has been proud to call Los Angeles home for the last 45 years, and we are thankful for this opportunity to participate in and give back to our community,” said David Lippman, President and CEO of TCW.  “Investing for the future is the core of our business, and it extends to our sincere commitment to investing in future generations to help keep our communities and country vibrant and strong.”

The reading room at Esperanza Elementary is part of a nationwide United Way program called Club Connect Adopt-a-School.  The program was designed for the nation’s poorest schools, to provide the books and other resources children do not otherwise have at home.  In low-income neighborhoods like Westlake, United Way Club Connect estimates that there is only one book per 300 children, compared to middle-income areas where there are 13 books for every child.

Los Angeles was targeted for the 2016 program, and TCW proudly became one of the first companies to sponsor a school near its own Los Angeles headquarters.  TCW and its employees donated $30,000 for the project, which included $10,000 for the Scholastic program.  In addition, employees worked multiple weekends to design and build the reading room and multipurpose room.

“Having a place where parents and children can sit and read is a tremendous resource for this community, and I expect this new reading room will enrich the educational experience for all 800 students here,” said Brad Rumble, Principal of Esperanza Elementary. “Local partners are valuable assets to our school. I would like to thank TCW for donating the time, materials and funds to make this a reality.”.
